Engadget is developing the Best Buy 2021 project to introduce recommended gadgets and services from the end of the year to the beginning of the year. From now on, I will repost the article by writer Kappa Maru.

Unihertz Jelly 2

In January 2021, Unihertz, a Chinese venture smartphone maker, is sequentially shipping the main body of the Android smartphone "Jelly 2" for Japan, which was established by soliciting investment by crowdfunding, as a reward product.

With an ultra-compact screen with a display size of only 3 inches and a smartphone with a strong personality of its small body size, there is nothing that can be recommended to many people, but it is not an irresistible one for those who sting. I think.

Jelly 2 with such a lot of personality has finally arrived at the author, so I will send you a review of what I noticed after actually using it.

First, open the Jelly 2 individual packaging box and see it as a bundled item. The contents included the Jelly 2 main unit, USB (Type-C) cable for charging and communication, USB charger, manuals, SIM pin, clear cover of TPU material, and display protection film.

The clear cover and display protection film are pre-attached to Jelly 2, and another display protection film is included.

Unihertz Jelly 2

I compared it with the Unihertz minimum smartphone "Atom" like the previous model "Jelly Pro".

In Jelly Pro / Atom, the display that was 2.45 inches has been increased to 3 inches, but you can see that the main body size is very small compared to Jelly Pro. It's a little thicker, but when I brought it, I didn't notice it.

As for the appearance, a 3-inch touch panel display with a resolution of FWVGA (480 x 854 dots) on the front side, touch operation type hard keys (back key, home key, app key from the left), in-camera with about 8 million pixels, speaker for calling , Proximity sensor, illuminance sensor.

On the back side, a main camera with about 16 million pixels (with a flashlight for shooting), a fingerprint authentication sensor, and a Felica / NFC sensor compatible with Osaifu-Keitai are arranged. Jelly 2 is the first unihertz smartphone compatible with Osaifu-Keitai.

There is a volume key on the left side, a power key, programming key, USB Type-C terminal on the right side, an infrared unit on the top surface, a microphone for movie shooting, a 3.5 mm earphone jack, and a microphone for calling on the bottom side. There is an external speaker.

As for the specifications of this machine, MediaTek chipset Helio P60 (2GHz x 8 cores) is used for SoC, and the operating memory is 6GB RAM. The main unit storage capacity is 128GB ROM and the battery capacity is 2000mAh. The battery capacity of the predecessor Jelly Pro was 950mAh, so the capacity has more than doubled. However, it can no longer be removed.

Two SIM card slots are available and support DSDV (DualSIM / DualVoLTE). As with recent unihertz smartphones, slot 2 is exclusive to the microSD card, and the microSD card cannot be used with two SIM cards inserted.

The red button "programming key" on the right side of the main unit is a button that calls a specific application or function set by the user in one shot, and it is convenient to register the camera application and screenshot key.

The outer shape of the main body is 95 mm in length x 49.4 mm in width x 16.5 mm in thickness, and the weight of the main body is 110 g.

Compatible mobile network lines are as follows

GSM (2G): Band 2/3/5/8

WCDMA (3G): Band 1,2,4,5,6,8,19

TDSCDMA (3G): Band 34/39

CDMA2000 (3G): BC0 / BC1

FDD / TDD LTE (4G): Band 1/2/3/4/5/7/8/12/13/17/18/19/20/25/26 / 28A / 28B / 66 Band 34/38/39 / 40/41

Home screen and pre-installed apps

The home screen consists of 4 images of Google Discover + 3 sides. Since Jelly 2 is a type without an application drawer (app list screen), I get the impression that the apps are packed in a narrow screen.

It looks a little cluttered, so I personally feel that it would have been better to have an application drawer that could be displayed as a slide like the previous Jelly Pro. (However, the good thing about Android is that you can customize it freely.)

In addition to Google apps such as Gmail, YouTube, and Google Play, pre-installed apps include student mode (kids mode), voice recorder, emergency alert setting app, FM radio, and infrared remote control setting app, which have become standard on unihertz smartphones after Titan. In addition to NoteBook (text input application), "Toolbox", which is an application that collects measurement tools such as heart rate system and noise meter, and "Osaifu Keitai" are pre-installed.

The camera function is just an accessory

The main camera of the Jelly Pro has about 16 million pixels, which is a big enhancement from the previous Jelly Pro, but it has only evolved to the same level as the unihertz Atom and Titan.

It is not a scene discrimination by AI or multiple camera sensors, but it is a standard camera application for smartphones using MediaTek SoC, so I think that it should be used only for sub-uses and small recordings. Personally, I felt that it was visibly under-adjusted compared to Titan and Atom L.

It's a simple camera with a single configuration, so if you use the camera frequently with this unit, add a third-party camera app separately. Please see the example of Jelly 2 that was only resized by auto.

I'm not good at shooting in the dark, probably because of the pre-installed camera app. Noise is generated even in the evening. It seems that he is not very good at rice terrorism. It's not bad if the room is bright enough, but ...

The in-camera has about 8 million pixels, which seems to be much better than the previous one with about 2 million pixels, but the beauty mode that was installed in the Jelly Pro in-camera has disappeared. rice field.

As an aside, the Jelly 2 camera app can mute the shutter sound, so it's easy to use in a quiet place where it's hard to make noise, which is a good impression for me personally.

Comfortable and compact Osaifu-Keitai

As mentioned above, the basic specifications of this unit are the MediaTek Helio P60, a SoC for middle specifications, equipped with 6GB RAM operating memory. This is the same spec as the Atom L reviewed earlier, but the screen resolution is FWVGA (480 x 854 dots), which is even smaller than the Atom L, which is about the same as a general feature phone (Garakei) in Japan. increase.

Both the score and ranking are not high, but the screen resolution is suppressed, so the operation is lighter than the measured value, and if you feel like it, most game apps will be able to operate comfortably. The screen is too small to operate comfortably, but ...

Another point I felt is that the battery life has improved considerably by increasing the capacity to more than double that of the previous generation. However, it is still 2000mAh, so if you use it crunchy, it may be a little unsatisfactory. Of course, this also has a trade-off with the body size, so some division may be necessary.

In addition, although the screen is larger than Jelly Pro and Atom, it has been improved a little, but if you do not input characters while paying attention to the position of your finger, it is easy to make a mistake in pressing (misalignment of the touch part). maybe. If you use it, you will soon get used to it, but you may need to be careful when switching from a general smartphone to this unit.

Also, I personally thought that it was the most regrettable that it was not waterproof or dustproof.

You shouldn't be too greedy because of the size of the main unit and the balance with the battery, but if you have a successor model, I would definitely like to expect support for the waterproof and dustproof function.

However, I think that it is a very unique terminal called a minimum size smartphone that is equipped with Osaifu-Keitai for Japan while maintaining sufficient performance.

It will be sold to the general public in the not too distant future (at a reasonable price) in Japan, so we picked up requests such as wanting a compact smartphone with practical class specifications and a smartphone for Osaifu-Keitai that you can easily carry around. I think it's a valuable one that will give you.

Please check it out when it is released.
